No Man’s Land?

During World War One the strip of land between the trenches of the opposing sides came to be known as “No Man’s Land”.  It was controlled by neither side, but constantly contested by both.  Perhaps, until we can address the critical issue of birthright citizenship, we need to create a “No Man’s Land” along our southern border.

Currently, U.S. immigration policy allows individuals to cross our borders illegally, and once on U.S. soil, be briefly detained by the Border Patrol and then released with a summons to return for a hearing before an immigration judge.  This might be weeks or even months in the future, and a great deal of these people just ignore the order and disappear into the general population.  Women who are pregnant on arrival, or become so while staying here illegally,  simply give birth, frequently at public expense, to so-called “Anchor Babies” who are automatically U.S. Citizens, because of the antiquated “Birthright Citizenship” laws on the books.  The longer they are here, the more babies they produce.

So, here’s an idea.  How about we declare that we are moving our legal southern border several hundred feet north of it’s present position, put “The Wall” there, and build detainment centers south of the new line for those who successfully cross the old border into the “No Man’s Land” we created?  This isn’t legally U.S. soil anymore, so no “Anchor Babies” or false claims for “Sanctuary” or “Political Asylum”.  It doesn’t belong to Mexico either, so babies born there would either be persons without a country, or citizens of their parent’s country, which should be the case anyhow.

As long as Congress continues to shirk it’s responsibilities for correcting our immigration laws, there will be hoards of people drawn here as economic refugees, bringing nothing in the way of useful skills to make this country a better place to live.  Yes, we will have to financially compensate U.S. citizens whose property has been confiscated to create the new barrier.  However that expense would be far less than that we are already paying to house, feed, clothe, educate and provide medical care for illegals in this country.
