“He’s coming. I’m gonna die.”

wolfThe final words texted to his mother by one of the victims of the “Pulse” nightclub shooter in Orlando last June were:

“Call them mommy. Now. I’m tell I’m bathroom. He’s coming. I’m gonna die. he has us, and he’s in here with us,”

The text might not be grammatically correct, but understand, it was from a terrified person who had apparently ACCEPTED the fact that he was about to die.  It was from a thirty year old man, not a child.  Yes, it was a “gay” nightclub, and the individual was as such presumably gay himself.  That has no bearing on the issue.  His sexual preferences should have nothing to do with a will to defend himself against a murderer.  He was not alone in that restroom.  Others were hiding in there with him, and presumably died there with him.  All but one.  She climbed out a window and ran for help.  Though smaller in size and weight than most of the victims, she had a will to live.  He and the others did not, and as a result were brutally murdered by one individual with a gun.  He could have just as easily used a knife, axe, club or a machete.  Those who won’t even try to defend themselves become victims.  It’s as simple and tragic as that.

The “Alpha Males” of a species, humanoid or any other, will fight to survive.  That is accomplished by dominating those who would attempt to dominate them.   There are also “Alpha Females” willing and capable of doing incredible acts to protect and defend their families and their young.  Small women are on record as having physically lifted automobiles off of their trapped children to free them after an accident.

So, why is it that so many people will not react to a life threatening situation, but instead will meekly submit to their executioner?  Is the basic animal instinct of “Fight or Flight” gradually being bred out of us?  I certainly hope not.  Most mass shooters have to stop and reload their weapon.  During that brief time period, they are vulnerable to counterattack.  This is especially true if they can be approached from multiple angles and put on the defensive.  Anything can become a defensive weapon.  A table-knife, a fork, even a ball point pen aimed at an eye can become a deadly tool and blind or even kill an attacker.  It just takes the will to try.  In the increasing dangerous world we live in we can’t try to hide and rely on the authorities to get there in time to save our lives or the lives of those around us.  We must try to become “sheepdogs” and protect each other from the human “wolves” who seem to grow in number each day.  A disarmed society is a vulnerable society.  Beware those who seek to deny you your right of self defense.  The predators are always out there.
